Human androstenol is only produced during puberty. This compound is responsible for changing the level of luteinizing hormone in the hypothalamus [1], which affects female fertility. It has been shown to alter mood and contribute to sexual arousal [2]. When exposed to Androstenol, some women may perceive men as more attractive [3]. Moreover, it has been observed that applying androstenol to the upper lip makes some women more relaxed.

Androstenol can also be used as a masking agent. Men avoid toilets sprayed with this compound (the effect of marking territory by another man) and perceive magazines sprayed with it more favorably (as more masculine).
